Common questions

Can you check if my stair complies with Part K?

Use the stair checker in Tools for a quick read, and we check every stair at design stage.

How do you install a spiral stair?

Usually as a central column with pre-fabricated treads bolted on site, so it fits through standard doorways.

What are the Part K rules for domestic stairs?

For a stair in a single home, Approved Document K allows a rise of up to 220 mm, a going of at least 220 mm and a pitch of no more than 42 degrees. Other building types have stricter limits.

How much headroom does a staircase need?

Approved Document K asks for at least 2 m of clear headroom over the stair. Loft conversions have some allowance where space is tight, so check your drawings with building control.

Can a steel staircase have timber or glass?

Yes. Steel stringers can carry timber, stone or glass treads, and the balustrade can be steel bars, glass or mesh.
