How to measure for a balustrade

A homeowner's guide to measuring runs, ends and fixings.

What to measure

  • Each straight run along the edge it protects, in millimetres.
  • Where each run starts and stops: against a wall, at a post or at a corner.
  • The finished floor level, including tiles or decking still to come.
  • For stairs, the length along the pitch line and the number of steps.

What to tell us

  • What it fixes to: concrete, timber, steel or masonry.
  • Top, side or face fixing.
  • Infill and finish you like.

Photos help

Take a wide photo of each run and close-ups of the ends. We survey before fabrication so the final balustrade fits exactly.
