In England and Wales, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 applies when building work affects a wall you share with a neighbour, such as cutting in to bear a steel beam.
What it usually means
- You serve notice on the adjoining owner before work starts. For work to a party wall this is normally at least two months.
- The neighbour can agree, or a party wall surveyor prepares an award.
How it affects your steel
The engineer may design padstones or a separate support so the beam bears safely on the wall. Allow time for the process in your programme.
We are not legal advisers. Take advice from a party wall surveyor for your situation.
