BS EN 1090 and UKCA marking explained

What factory production control means and why it matters on your project.

BS EN 1090 is the standard for fabricating structural steel. Part 1 covers how a fabricator proves its production is controlled. Part 2 sets the technical requirements for fabrication.

Factory production control

A fabricator with a certified factory production control (FPC) system has been audited on how it controls materials, welding, inspection and records. That is what allows structural steel to be UKCA marked.

Execution classes

The engineer specifies an execution class, EXC1 to EXC4, which sets how strict the fabrication and inspection must be. Most buildings are EXC2.

What it means for you

  • Traceable materials from mill certificate to delivery
  • Qualified welders and approved welding procedures
  • A Declaration of Performance with the steel

PSS holds BS EN 1090-1 FPC certification. See Accreditations.
