Most loft conversions need new steel beams to carry the new floor and to replace the support lost when the roof structure is cut. Your structural engineer sizes the beams; we fabricate them.
Getting long beams into a house
A beam can be too long to carry up the stairs. We splice it: the beam is cut into lengths and joined on site with bolted plates designed by the engineer. Each piece is light enough to carry by hand.
Bearings and padstones
Beam ends sit on padstones that spread the load into the wall below. The engineer specifies the padstone size and minimum bearing length, and building control checks it.
What we need
- The engineer’s calculations and beam schedule
- Measured lengths, or ask us to measure
- Whether you want primer only or a fire-protection finish
