Designing steel for galvanising

Vent and drain holes, sizes and what to expect from the finish.

Hot-dip galvanising dips the whole item in molten zinc. The steel has to be designed so zinc can flow in and out and air can escape.

Vent and drain holes

Hollow sections and closed boxes need vent and drain holes. Sealed sections must never be galvanised: trapped air and moisture expand in the bath, which is dangerous. We add the holes during detailing.

Size limits

Every galvanising bath has a maximum length, width and depth. Long members may need splices; we plan these with you.

Appearance

Galvanising is a working finish. Its colour varies from bright to dull grey and weathers evenly over time. For a colour, ask for galvanising plus powder coat.
