Juliet balconies explained

What a Juliet balcony is, the height it needs and how it is fixed.

A Juliet balcony is a balustrade fixed across a full-height opening, such as French doors, with no platform to step onto. It lets the doors open fully while guarding the drop.

Height and openings

In a home the guarding is usually 1100 mm high where it protects an external drop, and openings must not let a 100 mm sphere through. Your designer confirms the height for the location.

Fixings

Juliets fix into the reveals or onto the face of the wall. The fixings must suit the wall material and carry the guarding load, so the wall build-up matters when we design them.

Finishes

Galvanised and powder coated steel is the usual choice outdoors. Glass infill is available with a steel or stainless frame.
