Steel grades: S275 and S355

What the grade on your drawing means and why the letters after it matter.

The grade tells the fabricator which steel to buy. The number is the minimum yield strength in N/mm² for thinner material, so S355 is stronger than S275.

The letters after the grade

  • JR: impact tested at +20 °C.
  • J0: impact tested at 0 °C.
  • J2: impact tested at -20 °C, often asked for on external or thicker steel.

Which one do you need?

Your structural engineer chooses the grade and quality. S355 is now the most common grade for beams and columns. We order to the grade on the drawings and keep the mill certificates for your handover file.
