Fillet welds and butt welds

The two main weld types, and how welds are inspected.

Fillet welds

Triangular welds joining two parts at an angle, for example a fin plate to a column. They are the most common weld in steelwork.

Butt welds

Welds joining parts edge to edge, either full or partial penetration. Full penetration butt welds usually need edge preparation and more testing.

Inspection

All welds are visually inspected. Depending on the execution class, a proportion is also tested by magnetic particle (MT) or ultrasonic (UT) testing.

Our weld symbols tool explains the symbols you see on drawings.
